Just finished portrait of singer PINK – Fuckin’ Perfect

Singer Pink - fuckin perfect

Mixed media, measures 18 x 24″ (45.72 x 60.96cm) on deep gallery wrapped canvas.

I have so much respect for this woman. She is the epitome of badass, someone who many of us consider to be a strong woman. Not letting anyone define her, Pink’s lyrics to the song Fuckin Perfect are a testament to that. While starting out in the music industry she was recruited to be another one of those cookie-cutter girl singers that sang the same old songs about love and loss. She defied them all, writing music that had depth and meaning, something that’s oftentimes in short supply in mainstream music these days.

Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award

Recently Pink accepted MTV’s “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award” honoring her 17-year long career as a performer, and her trailblazing impact on music, pop culture, fashion and philanthropy,

When she accepted the award, Pink gave an uplifting speech inspired by a time when her daughter Willow said to her mom, “I’m the ugliest girl I know” and “look like a boy with long hair.”

Pink recalled telling her daughter. “‘You’re beautiful ” adding “When people make fun of me they say I look like a boy, or I’m too masculine or I’m too outspoken. Do you see me growing my hair? Do you see me changing my body? Do you see me selling out arenas all over the world?”

Making a Pearl

She continued, “Baby girl, we don’t change,” she said as she called out artists like Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Janis Joplin, George Michael, and Elton John. “We take the gravel in the shell and make a pearl. We help other people to change, so they can see all kinds of beauty.”

This painting incorporates the lyrics to the powerful song  Fuckin’ Perfect

Made a wrong turn, once or twice

Dug my way out, blood and fire

Bad decisions, that’s alright

Welcome to my silly life

Mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood

Miss “No way, it’s all good”, it didn’t slow me down

Mistaken, always second guessing, underestimated

Look, I’m still around

Pretty, pretty please, don’t you ever ever feel

Like you’re less than fuckin’ perfect

Pretty pretty please, if you ever, ever feel like you’re nothing

You’re fuckin’ perfect to me!

You’re so mean, when you talk, about yourself you were wrong

Change the voices in your head, make them like you instead

So complicated, look how big, you’ll make it

Filled with so much hatred, such a tired game

It’s enough! I’ve done all I can think of

Chased down all my demons, I’ve seen you do the same

Oh, pretty, pretty please, don’t you ever, ever feel

Like you’re less than fuckin’ perfect

Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel like you’re nothing

You’re fuckin’ perfect to me

The whole world’s scared, so I swallow the fear

The only thing I should be drinking is an ice cold beer

So cool and limed and we try, try, try

But we try too hard and it’s a waste of my time

Done looking for the critics ’cause there everywhere

They don’t like my jeans, they don’t get my hair

Exchange ourselves and we do it all the time

Why do we do that, why do I do that?

Why do I do that?

Oh, pretty, pretty please, don’t you ever, ever feel

Like you’re less than fuckin’ perfect

Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel like you’re nothing

You’re fuckin’ perfect to me!

You’re perfect, you’re perfect

Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel like you’re nothing

You’re fuckin’ perfect to me

Close-up of detail

This is painted in mars black, cadmium red medium and iridescent fine gold.

The gold really shimmers, but it’s not captured very well by the camera.

  1. I must admit, I never heard a thing from Pink. Loved your write-up, though so may need to check it out. What drew me? The GREAT portrait, wow, did you catch fire on it. Her expression and the blasted musical stanzas MAKE IT!

    • Hi Maryellen! You might want to check out her music. Some of it is so powerful, but if it’s not your taste in music, then maybe no amount of good song writing will get your attention Am glad you are intrigued enough to check out her work though! Let me know what you think. If you have Spotify, tune into a channel there. I heard stuff from her that I’ve never heard till this past week!

  2. I wouldn’t say I have heard many of songs she sings, but your painting is definitely perfect. It has life and movement in it and colors are just what they need to be.

    • Appreciate your thoughtful comments Inese, thank you. This is the second PINK painting I’ve done – the first was a disaster

  3. Good one Deb, powerful like her music…
