Isn’t it odd that even though the lyrics to John Lennon’s song IMAGINE were written in 1971, they are still timeless today?

“Imagine” Lyrics

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today… Aha-ah…Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace… You…You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world… You…
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Those words still ring true even though they were written 46 years ago! Rolling Stones David Fricke commented: “[Lennon] calls for a unity and equality built upon the complete elimination of modern social order: geopolitical borders, organized religion, [and] economic class.” John Lennon was such a visionary.

The idea for this painting came to me as I wondered what he might be thinking, if he were here today, seeing all this craziness in the world. That is why there are all the paint splatters and drips, I wanted to give this piece a frenetic kind of emotion, but beneath it all there is calm.

By the way, it looks like Yoko Ono will finally get her name added to the songwriting credits. John had said that the “lyric and the concept”  for this song came from her 1964 book titled “Grapefruit”!

Letters and clouds.. John Lennon – IMAGINE

In keeping with my last piece here I’m exploring typography / text in my paintings. Couple this with the message of “why can’t we all just get along” and this is what you get.

John Lennon always had so much to say, he was years ahead of his time, gone too soon… I miss him…

Be kind to each other, now more than ever. Then maybe someday, the world WILL live as one.

Nice one Deb. I remember a friend ( who knew and loathed Lennon – he did a small illustration for her and she ripped it up and
binned it) got me to submit a couple of Beatle paintings for a exhibition in Liverpool.- she reckoned they always sold. When I went to view it there were at least twenty of Lennon. They came home with me though I did get rid of the Lennon one years later.

Thanks Graham. I love this one, almost hate to let it go.. This marks the first time I’ve had a painting collected within an hour of posting on facebook.

Very nice interpretation of “Imagine” Deb. Congrats for your obvious successes re collector statements. It’s never an easy market for us. Each success should be celebrated.

Hey John, thank you. This was an especially hard one to let go. But it helps to know that the collector is as big a fan as I am 🙂
