Born out of chaos or self-expression or both? Road Trip!

Some days

Some days I get in the studio ready to start painting with a well conceived idea in mind. It starts with sketches, then I lay down some different colors with colored pencils or pastels to work on my color themes. Next, I paint these ideas on paper and if I like where it’s going, then paint them onto canvas. Other days I approach the canvas and just paint, things are born organically. Road Trip! is born out of both styles. A sketch that evolved…

abstract painting titled Road Trip! by Deb Breton
ROAD TRIP! by Deb Breton 16″ x 20″ x .75″ (41 x 51 cm) Acrylic on stretched canvas $250. Expressive and gestural abstract painting. Pastel blue, purple, sand and light green. Painted closely to Pantone’s 2018 Verdure color palette.

Using Autodesk SketchBookX

Another thing I like to do it use an app called SketchBookX. I use it to refine my colors, especially when I’m painting on canvas. I will take a photo with my phone, then import the image of the canvas painting (what is painted thus far) and then add/tweak the colors using the app. Sketchbook allows you to add layers so you can manipulate layers of colors and play around with the color theme. I know there are other apps out there that do this, but I’m pretty happy with this one. Please note: there are several different versions of this app too. Maybe one day I’ll write a post about the different apps I use, like color wheels and mixers, but that’s another day…

Color Palette

Mostly I had an idea for the concept of this one and found myself exploring a new color palette. There’s another painting in the works (that I’ve been working on it the last few days) that is much larger and has a similar color palette. It’s also more of a mixed media piece. I really like the new Pantone colors. Who knows? I may even try all of Pantone’s 2018 color themes just for fun!

The goal or aim

The aim today has been to really push myself out of my comfort zone and stretch boundaries. This includes moments of “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing” but I just keep “pressing on”… sometimes I like what happens, other times, not so much… Just know that for every painting that see’s the light of day, there are others that do not.

Like the painting? You can get it here.

Anyway, if anyone does read this blog, I’m curious your thoughts or take away on the style or color palette of Road Trip!?

Keep positive my friends… Keep planting the seeds of love…

Wonderful! I love your new color scheme. It’s always worth exploring something new.
I think you might consider some plugins for loading the site faster because it usually takes very long time to get to like it. It seems this time again I either have to come back later or wait much longer, not sure. It might be just the Internet on my side, too. However, most sites are loading quicker.
I think this is WordPress org, so there are lots of free and paid plugins to achieve faster loading.

Hi Inese! Yes, there’s been an issue with the like button, hopefully they (jetpack) can get it worked out for me because I’m all out of ideas 🙂 Thanks for your input on the new color palette, almost finished with another in the same colors!

Deb, the colours are great, but what makes it for me are the lines which, for me, add another dimension and give it structure. I would like it but the field just keeps on loading

Hi Graham, I appreciate your feedback, it’s good to know that the lines give you an anchor, or structure. As for the intermittent issue with the “LIKE” button, it seems to have reared itself again. I’ve a request into jetpack to look into it. Thanks again for the heads up and the great feedback! Have a great day!
