Poet Amanda Gorman Painting

Modern Neo expressive portrait painting on stretched canvas

As an artist, I was instantly inspired to paint Amanda Gorman after watching and LISTENING to her poem THE HILL WE CLIMB during the presidential inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Struck by the wisdom of her words and the power she conveyed using her hands, I debated putting some of those words in this painting. But she cannot be defined by one poem. I feel she is a work in progress and there is much more greatness to come from her, that’s why she isn’t painted in “fully”. There is greatness in her wise soul and much more to be fleshed out as she comes into her own. Some say she is the next Maya Angelou – but I shy from comparisons. How does one even begin to compare individuals, we are all part of the whole…

With every portrait painting, I do exhaustive research. It helps me to feel their spirit while painting them. Amanda Gorman is a light, who shines ever so brightly.
